It is impossible to say how long you can live with silicosis because there are several factors to consider. It is true that silicosis is a disease that does not currently have a cure, and the illness can potentially reduce your life. However, over the last several decades, there have been advances in the treatment of the disease and an increase in understanding of the multiple facts of disease management that could pointedly affect how long you can live with silicosis.

  • Avoid further exposure to silica
  • Educate yourself about the disease
  • Quit smoking
  • Get yearly vaccinations, such as pneumococcal and influenza
  • Be vigilant about watching for the development of TB or other infections
  • Consider enrolling in clinical trials
  • Have a plan to manage flare-ups of the disease.


    How long you can live with silicosis it can be a matter of how well you manage both your disease and yourself. Disease management styles have changed dramatically over the past few dickers.  many healthcare professionals now understand that medicines and surgeries are not the only factors in that type of disease. They know that disease management includes taking care of the patient’s overall physical and mental health. Some of the ways you may be able to affect how long you live with silicosis include:
  •    Exercising as much as you can and in any way you can
  •    Being aware of symptoms of other infections and contacting your doctor if you notice  them
  •    Quitting smoking or avoiding smoke-filled environments
  •    Making sure you get your yearly vaccinations
  •    Maintaining a healthy diet
  •    Avoiding further exposure to silica dust
