Can you use baking soda for blasting?

Soda blasting is a safe paint stripping and cleaning process that uses soda media by a  designed pressurized blasting pot system onto the area which is cleaned. It removes paint and contaminants without harming the underlying surface.

This is the method of soda blasting how to works. Soda blasting particles remove the surface contaminate by the energy released as the particles implode when pressure-driven into contact. The resulting release of energy disrupts the contaminate surface thus leaving the substrate unaffected and it has No heat no sparks!

Can you use baking soda for blasting?


Blast material is baking soda and yes; it can make biscuits with it! It is an environmentally, non- toxic, non-hazardous food-grade material that is 100% water-soluble and environmentally friendly. The size of the soda particles is coarser than those you have in your baking soda box at home.

It is an excellent paint stripping method for fiberglass boat hulls and can also be used to strip engine parts, brick, concrete, hardwood, surface rust, paint and rust from cars, stains, airplane parts, graffiti, fire restoration, a degreaser for kitchen and mechanical components and more.



  • TIPS FOR BEST RESULTS SODA BLASTING WITH A REGULAR SANDBLASTER
So if you find that investing in a soda blaster would not make sense because you have a single project in mind or the extra cost doesn’t make sense here are a few tips to getting the best results soda blasting out of a standard sandblaster. First, if you will be using a standard blast pot for soda blasting you may want to limit the amount of media you put inside the sand blaster. Since soda can be sensitive to moisture and be prone to clumping together limiting the amount you use at a given time can ensure easier clearing of any clogs that may occur while using soda media. Additionally, you will have better results soda blasting with your standard blast pot if your blast pot valve is designed to work with any abrasive and not just expendable abrasives. When it comes to a soda media this may not be a fine enough control to be able to properly limit the amount of soda in your blast air stream whereas a valve designed for use with any abrasive (like that shown below) can better control abrasive flow. Finally, since soda blasting can be even dustier than traditional blasting you may want to consider a wet blast injection nozzle that allows you to inject water at the blast nozzle and reduce dust.
